Modifying the Template and Updating Pages

Using a template makes it possible to build all your pages without worrying about whether every element is complete. In fact, without having pages, it is extremely difficult to build navigation. Build your pages first, leaving incomplete areas locked; then revisit the template, add the navigation links, and update all your site pages.

All areas of your template are editable, but only the locked regions will be updated. To push changes to pages, save your template after modification. As with a library item, an Update Template Files dialog box opens to show all pages based on the template and to allow you to choose whether to update at this time; you may update later if desired.

Click Update to push the changes to the pages. A log that lists all activity displays the number of pages examined and updated. If changes to the template were only in editable regions, the log may indicate that no changes were made to the pages. In some cases, Dreamweaver may indicate that some pages could not be updated.

 Habitat Alert site   Follow these steps to link the main navigation buttons to the pages that have been built with the template:

1. Open the Basic Page template file either from the Template Assets panel (double-click) or from the Templates folder in the Site panel.

2. Select the LEARN navigation button. Use the Point to File icon in the Property inspector to link to the learn/index.htm page in the Site panel.

3. Repeat for the remaining buttons, each time selecting the appropriate index page in that button's folder.

4. Save the Template. When prompted to update, click the Update button.

You are not required to update every time you save a template file. You may opt not to update at this time by clicking Don't Update. To push changes when you are ready to update, use the Template panel's Options menu to select Update Site and click the Start button to begin the update process.
