Building Template-based Pages

 < Day Day Up >

With a template, you can easily add new pages to the site. Because key areas are left as locked regions, you can always go back to the template and add elements to push to all the pages. There are several ways to build new site pages from an existing template.

New From Template

To add a page based on your template, select the template in the Template Assets panel and right-click (Control+click) to choose New From Template. (You can also use the panel Options menu.)

Habitat Alert site   To add the main page for the Act section of the site using the New From Template method, follow these steps:

  1. Select the Basic Page template in the Template Assets panel (Template category).

  2. Right-click (Control+click) and choose New From Template.

  3. When the new page appears, it is important to save the document before you make changes to it. Save this document as  index.htm in the act folder of your defined site. Close the page. You edit it later.

Document Gallery templates

When you create a template, it is added to the templates accessible from the Document Gallery. The Document Gallery is an assortment of different page types and layouts that you can use to build site pages. You can access your templates from the Gallery by choosing File ® New and clicking the Templates tab, as shown in Figure 37-9.

Habitat Alert site   Build the main pages for the Find, Learn, and Support sections of the Habitat Alert site using the Document Gallery:

  1. Choose File ® New or press Control+N (Command+N) to open the Document Gallery.

    Tip

It is possible to disable the automatic opening of the Document Gallery. Click the Preferences button at the bottom of the Template tab to access the application preferences and remove the check from the Show New Document on Control+N option.

  2. Select the template in the right column, and click the Create button.

  3. As usual, save the file before editing. Save this page as  index.htm in the find folder. Close the page. You edit it later.

  4. Repeat Steps 1–3 to add two more new pages to the site. Name each  index.htm but place them in the learn and support folders. Close each page after saving.
