The Advantages of CSS

 < Day Day Up >

The most important argument for using CSS is that it removes all the extraneous markup that controls how the content appears, leaving the HTML structural markup as it was originally intended to be — a set of selectors that are applied so that any user agent (browser, reader, printer, and so on) can interpret the content structurally and present it as needed. After all, a printer has different needs than a Web browser has; the reader used by a sight-impaired user definitely doesn't need <font> information. Block element selectors in HTML have meaning. With CSS, the HTML can return to a purer form, uncluttered by unnecessary markup.

The biggest advantage of using CSS comes with how and where rules are defined. Instead of controlling the appearance of text (for example) at the block level, a single rule may be written in a separate page and applied to all pages within a site. When you want to change the information in a rule, only one edit is needed. That is a definite time-saver. It also means that pages tend to be more consistently styled, because all pages share the same rules, more or less.
