Adding Text Content

 < Day Day Up >

Much of your site's content will likely be text. It's easy to add text to your pages by typing. Dreamweaver adds the underlying HTML code. You can format the text using the Insert bar, Text menu, Property inspector, or a Tag Editor.

Text selections

You can swipe through a word or paragraph to select text, but Dreamweaver offers the following easier options:

  • Double-click to select a single word.

  • Triple-click to select an entire paragraph.

  • Double-click the first word and press Shift to limit your selection. Click the last word of the desired selection.

  • To select a single line of text, move your cursor to the left edge of the text block. When the cursor changes from the I-beam text cursor to a white arrow, click. Shift+click another line to select it and all lines between the first and last line.

Copy and paste functions

If you have existing content, you may want to copy and paste it into your Dreamweaver page. There are several ways to do this: the one you should use depends upon where your copied text comes from — Word documents, a browser window, or another HTML or text document opened with Dreamweaver.

Fireworks MX   To use text from a Fireworks file, copy it from the Text Editor. Text copied directly on the screen will not paste into Dreamweaver.

Use the Edit menu to access basic Copy and Paste functions. Depending upon the source of the copied text and the view in which you are working, you may also opt to use the Copy HTML and Paste HTML functions. For example, if you copy text from a browser window or another Dreamweaver document, in Design view choose Paste HTML to remove any formatting applied to the text.

Tip

Here's a quick way to move text from one opened Macromedia Dreamweaver document to the other: Make your selection; then drag and drop into the desired location on the target page.

Using Word documents

If your content exists as Word documents, use Dreamweaver's Import Word and Clean Up Word HTML functions to speed up page development. To use Word content, save the Word page as an HTML page into your site, or choose File ® Import ® Word HTML. When importing, Dreamweaver automatically uses Clean Up Word HTML to let you modify and remove Word's proprietary markup, reducing the amount of code in the page. When opening a Word document, you access Clean Up Word HTML from the Commands menu.
