Setting Target Browsers

 < Day Day Up >

In the next chapter, you build basic page layouts. To view your work in progress, you preview pages locally in a Web browser. When you planned your site, you set browser targets — now set Dreamweaver to use those target browsers to preview your pages. To add a Preview browser, follow these steps:

  1. Choose File ® Preview in Browser ® Edit Browsers, or Edit ® Preferences; then select the Preview in Browser category. Both methods take you to the Preview category in the Preferences.

  2. Add (+) a New Browser.

  3. Browse to locate and select the browser that you determined the majority of your visitors will be using. PC users should find browsers in their Program files. Mac users may have them in the Applications folder.

    Tip

Ideally, you will have, locally or on another machine, a copy of the target browsers running so that you can test your pages during development. The more complex and mission-critical your site, the more important it is to test early and often.

  4. The Name field is auto-populated, but alter the name to reflect the version of the browser you chose.

  5. Set this browser as the Primary Browser; then click OK.

  6. Repeat the process to add a secondary browser.

    Note

PC users can run only one version of the Internet Explorer browser but can have multiple versions of other browsers. Mac users can run multiple versions of all browsers.

To preview a Web page in your primary browser, highlight it in the Site panel (window) and press F12. Ctrl+F12 (Command+F12) previews the selected page in the secondary browser. These shortcuts are automatically set up when you define the primary and secondary browsers.

Cross-Reference

You may add as many browsers as necessary for your site. See Chapter 31 to find out how to add a shortcut.

To access other browsers without a shortcut, choose File ® Preview in Browser, and select the browser or use the same option in the contextual menu, which you access by right-clicking a file in the Site panel/window.

Habitat Alert site   Select Internet Explorer 5+ for your primary browser. Add Netscape 4+ for a secondary browser. Add Netscape 6+ as a third browser target.
