What's New in ColdFusion MX

Macromedia Studio MX marks the first time ColdFusion has been bundled with Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and Flash and as you might expect from this union, compatibility and interactivity between the applications has markedly improved. Dreamweaver in particular has gained some new features allowing ColdFusion MX developers to create and troubleshoot their code. Dreamweaver also serves as the replacement for ColdFusion Studio, the development interface many ColdFusion developers used with previous versions of the software.

The ColdFusion MX server product has also undergone a complete revamp. While previous versions of ColdFusion were written in C, ColdFusion MX is written in Java, which brings the program into the J2EE fold and allows Macromedia to offer a version of the program that is directly compatible with J2EE application servers such as IBM's WebSphere and BEA's WebLogic.

Other additions and modifications found in the MX version of ColdFusion are as follows.

Java integration

ColdFusion Server now comes in two varieties: the standard ColdFusion MX Server and ColdFusion MX Server for J2EE Application Servers. The latter enables Java developers to integrate the Java platform seamlessly with ColdFusion's ease of use. Both server versions also allow Java Server Pages (JSPs) to be used.

Macromedia Flash remoting

ColdFusion MX and Flash MX can now seamlessly exchange data, enabling ColdFusion developers to take advantage of Flash's advanced interface capabilities, and Flash developers to use ColdFusion's powerful programming tools.

ColdFusion components

ColdFusion components, or CFCs, expand on ColdFusion custom tags by enabling developers to create powerful, reusable components that may be called from ColdFusion templates, Macromedia Flash, clients, or as Web services.

XML support

ColdFusion MX enables developers to read, parse, and write XML documents using standard ColdFusion tags. When XML documents are read into ColdFusion MX, they become native ColdFusion objects, which can be treated like any other standard ColdFusion variable.

Improved integration with Dreamweaver MX

ColdFusion developers who use Dreamweaver MX as an interface will find a host of new features including a redesigned code editor and improved debugging tools.

Character-based language support

ColdFusion MX now enables you to build applications that support character-based languages, such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

Graphing and Charting

ColdFusion MX has vastly improved the performance and features of its graphing and charting functions, allowing developers to quickly and easily create several types of charts, build configurable "drill down" data presentations, and integrate graphing and charting functions with Flash MX.
