A new document opens automatically when you launch Flash MX. You can open additional documents by choosing File ® New or File ® New From Template — a new feature to Flash MX. Figure 23-4 shows that there are seven categories of templates and each one contains Category Items. These are great starter templates for a variety of projects.

The View menu contains options that control various functions within the Document window. Table 24-1 shows a listing of the options and their functions.
Option | Description |
---|---|
Goto | There is a submenu of scenes in the current movie. You can also access this menu from the Edit Scene icon in the Document window. |
Zoom In | Increases the scale of the Stage by 50 percent. |
Zoom Out | Decreases the scale of the Stage by 50 percent. |
Magnification | Various view size options. |
Outlines | All shapes are shown as outlines only. This option does not affect how your movie exports, only how you view it. |
Fast | Anti-aliasing and dithering are turned off to speed up the display. This option does not affect how your movie exports, only how you view it. |
Antialias | The edges of shapes and lines are dithered to make them look smoother. This option does not affect how your movie exports, only how you view it. |
Antialias Text | Smoothes the edges of text. You can use only one Anti-alias option, either for text or for shapes. This option does not affect how your movie exports, only how you view it. |
Timeline | Shows or hides the timeline even when it's docked. |
Work Area | The gray area around the Stage can be used when this option is turned on. |
Rulers | Toggles the ruler's visibility on and off. If you are going to use guides, rulers have to be turned on. |
Grid | You can choose to show the grid (which doesn't export), or to snap to grid, or edit grid from this menu. When you choose the Snap to Grid option, items snap to it even if it's invisible. |
Guides | Rulers need to be turned on for guides. Drag a horizontal or vertical guide from the rulers. Submenu options are Show Guides, Lock Guides, Snap To Guides, and Edit Guides. |
Snap to Pixel | This option aligns items to the x and y coordinates to be in whole-pixel increments. A 1-pixel grid appears when the Stage is magnified to 400 percent or higher. |
Snap to Objects | When you move an item from its origin point, it snaps into alignment with items already on the Stage. |
Show Shape Hints | Shape Hints are used when tweening shapes. |
Hide Edges | Hide Edges hides the selection pattern without affecting the selection. |
Hide Panels | Hides or unhides all visible panels. You can also use F4 or the Tab key. |
