Lab 17.3: Using ScanDisk or Check Disk


ScanDisk is a utility that checks the disk surface and the files and folders on the hard drive in Windows 98. It automatically runs after the system has been improperly shut down. To prevent ScanDisk from running automatically after you start the system, you need to gracefully or properly shut down the system using one of various methods. Windows 2000 and Windows XP have a similar utility called Check Disk.

Upon completion of this lab, you will be able to:

  • Run ScanDisk

Set Up

For this lab, you will need a computer running Windows 98, Windows 2000, or Windows XP.

Exercise

ScanDisk can perform two different scans, Standard and Thorough. The Standard scan just check files and folders. The Thorough Scan checks the disk surface as well. In the Advanced Options, you can select what to display, how to log, what to check for, and how to fix problems. Check Disk is used in Windows 2000 and Windows XP to automatically fix file system errors and to scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

  1. Open the ScanDisk or Check Disk program.

    In Windows 98:

    In the Run command field, type scandisk.

    In Windows 2000:

    Open My Computer, Right-click on the C: drive and select Properties. When the Properties dialog box opens, click on the Tools tab. From the Tools tab click on Error-checking.

  2. When the ScanDisk or Check Disk window opens, select the drive to be scanned. Select Standard for the type of scan to be performed. Click Start.

  3. When the ScanDisk Results window appears, record the number of folders, hidden files, and user files found:

  4. Click Close to close the ScanDisk Results window.

  5. Click the Advanced button. This option is only available with ScanDisk.
