Chapter 15: Windows Networking

Labs you will perform in this chapter:

  • Lab 15.1: Installing Network Protocols and Services

  • Lab 15.2: Troubleshooting Network Protocols

  • Lab 15.3: Creating and Accessing Shares

  • Lab 15.4: Configuring Firewalls in Windows XP

This chapter deals with how to get two or more computers to talk with each other so they can pass data between themselves. In order for the computers to communicate, they need to have a protocol. We will cover how to install and troubleshoot network protocols.

After the protocols are installed and configured, you need to create shares that contain the information you wish to allow other users to see. This process is called sharing. Sharing allows you to give other users access to your folders and printers. Because you may need to control who is accessing your resources, Windows XP has implemented a firewall. A firewall is a packet filter that helps you to control access. If you have a direct connection to the Internet, such as DSL or a cable modem, you should definitely control access to your computer.
