Most of the devices you will install in today’s computer world are PnP compatible. However, you will still run into devices that require you to configure them to work properly in the computer.
Upon completion of this lab, you will be able to install a non-PnP device.
For this lab, you will need the following:
A computer running Windows 98, Windows 2000, or Windows XP
A new device for installation
Device driver CD or floppies
Device documentation
The first step in this lab is to identify which resources are available for use by the new device. This requires you to look at the IRQs, I/O addresses, and possibly DMA channels. Once you identify which resources are available, you need to look at which resources can be set on the device. You may have to disable another device for this to work. If the other device is PnP, it should be reconfigured after the non-PnP device is up and running.
Boot the computer. Record the system information.
In Windows 98:
Start Programs Accessories System Tools System Information
In Windows 2000:
Right-click on My Computer Manage
Computer Management window System Information Hardware Resources
In Windows XP:
Start Help and Support Use Tools to View Your Computer Information and Diagnose Problems My Computer Information General System Information
Record which IRQs and I/O addresses are available:
Read the device’s documentation and check which IRQs and I/O addresses are usable by the device. Decide which IRQ and I/O address you will use for the device.
Set the device to use the appropriate IRQ and I/O address. The documentation tells you how to set the DIP switches or position the jumpers for the settings.
Turn off the computer and remove the cover.
Warning | Remember to safeguard all of your components. Follow the safety procedure listed earlier in the book for electrostatic discharge (ESD). |
Install the new device in an empty slot. Secure the device using the installation screw.
Replace the cover and boot the computer.
Open Control Panel and double-click on the Add New Hardware icon.
Follow the on-screen prompts until you get to the option that asks if you want Windows to search for the new hardware. Select No, I Want to Select the Hardware from a List. Click Next.
From the Hardware Type list, select the type of device. Click Next.
Click the Have Disk option. Place the CD or floppy in the drive.
Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.
