Microsoft has released two separate Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 SP1 Management Packs for monitoring SharePoint Server 2007. The first is specifically for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, and it can also be used in deployments that include only Windows SharePoint Services. Note that Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 SP1 is required if you want to use these Management Packs.
If SharePoint Server 2007 has been deployed in addition to Windows SharePoint Services, both the Windows SharePoint Services and the SharePoint Server 2007 Management Packs must be used to ensure all services are monitored. The Management Packs are not supplied with SharePoint Server 2007 but can be downloaded free of charge from the Microsoft Web site.
In addition to the Management Packs provided specifically for SharePoint, to adequately monitor SharePoint Server 2007 a number of additional Management Packs should be used to monitor the underlying services and technologies that SharePoint depends on. These supplementary Management Packs are covered in more detail later in this chapter in the "Supplementary Management Packs" section.
Microsoft has also released a Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Management Pack for Microsoft Office Project Server 2007, a product that requires and builds on the Windows SharePoint Services platform. Any deployments that include Project Server 2007 will benefit from using both the Windows SharePoint Services Management Pack and the Project Server 2007 Management Pack.
