Chapter 2. Making the Transition: Multi-Tier Development for System Administrators

In the following chapters, you will be presented with code segments and exercises you can use to assemble a fully customized administrative application for your enterprise. As an expert in systems administration, you might be familiar with the topics being discussed, but you might lack some of the development skills required to create a working administrative application. In this chapter, we explore the configuration of the development environment to help you create working applications from the code segments presented in this book. In addition, we will discuss some of the advantages of jumping into the deep end of Visual Basic development by using ADSI in Component Object Model (COM) objects.

Although we will discuss some of the fundamental elements of Visual Basic programming and COM development, this chapter is not intended as a comprehensive guide to programming in Visual Basic. If you are new to development, you should examine a text dedicated to Visual Basic so that you can master the fundamental concepts of the language. Many excellent resources about Visual Basic and COM development are available, several of which are described in Appendix C, "Further Reading."

This chapter is an overview of the capabilities of Visual Basic. Although several ADSI code segments are included in the exercises, these are meant only to demonstrate a particular concept ”do not be alarmed that the code may seem foreign to you at this point. The chapters that follow will give you a more in-depth discussion of Visual Basic-based ADSI development.

With the disclaimers regarding the scope of this chapter out of the way, we can now get down to the business at hand, which is to show you the power of ADSI, Visual Basic, and COM.
