Using the EFM 1 FM Synthesizer

The EFM 1 is a digital synthesizer that utilizes frequency modulation (one oscillator modulates another, creating new harmonics) to generate sound. The EFM 1, like its famous FM predecessor, the Yamaha DX7, excels at producing metallic timbres such as bells.

1.

Select the Inst 5 track.

2.

In the Arrange channel strip, click-hold the input field and choose Stereo Logic > EFM 1.

The EFM 1 interface opens.

3.

Click-hold the preset menu and choose Bells > Bell Swarm.

4.

Play your MIDI keyboard to audition the instrument.

The preset offers a swirling metallic bell sound that works well but lasts a tad too long.

5.

Click-hold the R (Release) slider in the Volume Env (Envelope) section on the right side, and nudge it down slightly to decrease the release time of the sound.

6.

Play the song to hear the part through the EFM 1.
