Chapter 9. Putting the Pieces Together

So far, we have mostly seen WebDAV requirements for individual requests and responses. A few more issues are involved in using multiple requests in an ongoing communication with real clients or servers. In this chapter we address this topic with a user scenario illustrating how real WebDAV clients and servers use WebDAV methods to accomplish tasks.

Although we introduce no new methods in this chapter, some new headers appear, typically for content negotiation, authentication, and connection control. Some are from HTTP and others are proprietary. Most can be ignored, but a WebDAV server must support some of the nonstandard headers that Microsoft Web Folders use if it needs to interoperate with Web Folders.

We cleaned up the headers and XML bodies in the traces by adding spacing and line returns to improve readability. The formatting does not change the validity or meaning of the messages, except for the introduction of some line returns that are indicated with the same special symbol used previously.
