13.6 Summary

WebDAV access control extends WebDAV to provide two major related pieces of functionality: the ability to retrieve and change access control settings and the ability to identify and search for principals to name in access control settings.

Access control settings are exposed through properties on a resource. The primary property contains an ACL. The ACL property contains a number of access control entries, each of which names a principal and a number of permissions granted or denied. The ACL property is not directly writable; instead, the client must use the ACL method to change the value.

The set of permissions supported may not be the same on every server. Instead, the WebDAV ACL standard provides a way to map custom permissions to a known set of standard permissions.

Each principal is assigned a WebDAV URL for identification. The principal URL space provides a minimal way to find, list, and identify principals, which can be users or groups. The principal URL is used to identify principals in the ACL property, as well as in other WebDAV access control properties that require a principal.
