Converting text files to XML is a task that can be performed via custom code by means of various scripting languages. Although a delimited flat file with employee information sounds generic, the conversion requires custom code that is closely tied to the format and content of the text file. Since our primary focus is on generating SVG documents, check the CD-ROM for this chapter to see examples of Unix shell scripts and Perl scripts that convert a text file with employee data into an XML document.
