This chapter discussed the capability to provide wavelength services using the ONS 15454 MSTP. It also detailed the types of wavelength services available and their associated characteristics. Additionally, each wavelength service provided on the ONS 15454 MSTP can employ various protection schemes ranging from unprotected circuits to both client- and DWDM trunk-protected circuits. The most economically viable means of offering wavelength services on DWDM physical infrastructure is to use ROADM nodes at each wavelength insertion/drop point. The ROADM provides the service provider with the most flexibility in determining DWDM channel utilization and also provides speedy installation, maintenance, and operations, in comparison to traditional fixed-channel OADM solutions. Finally, the ONS 15454 MSTP provides a wide array of industry-standard management interfaces that allow the DWDM wavelength system to be managed locally, using the craft interface or using Element/Network Manager solutions. |
