Several technologies being deployed from Multiservice Provisioning Platform (MSPP) legacy platforms go beyond the traditional time-division multiplexing (TDM) services (DS1 and DS3 circuits) and optical services (OC-3, OC-12, OC-48, or even OC-192). As we consider the traditional technologies over a Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) facility, it is important to note that these technologies are all encapsulated within a SONET frame and carried in the SONET payload. As we venture into the next-generation MSPP technologies, some of these advanced services are encapsulated within a SONET frame as the payload (such as Ethernet private line, shown in Figure 3-1), and some are deployed on the SONET platform but do not ride the SONET frame (such as dense wavelength-division multiplexing [DWDM], shown in Figure 3-2). DWDM from an MSPPTherefore, when the terminology "advanced technologies over MSPP" is used, you might have to reprogram your thinking to go beyond simply SONET encapsulation of services to that of any service that can be launched from the MSPP platform. This chapter covers three major advanced technologies:
For each, you will look at a brief history of the evolution of the service in general and then focus on their integration into the MSPP platform. |
