This chapter is an overview of different network-management architectures to monitor fault and performance on an MSPP network. Also discussed were the different management protocols used in the ONS 15454. TL1 and SNMP are both supported on the ONS 15454, highlighting that TL1 can provision and monitor the ONS 15454, whereas SNMP can only monitor, not provision, the ONS 15454. Whether SNMP or TL1 is used, it is important for you to define what information needs to be monitored to meet your fault and performance objectives. If SNMP will be used, the MIB objects and traps must be determined. Many large service providers are trying to migrate away from their heritage OSS by adding a newer set of OSS that is capable of monitoring not only SONET rings, but also Ethernet services running over an MSPP network. This means that TL1 is still being used to monitor Layer 1 services, such as SONET and DWDM, and the EMS manages Layer 2 Ethernet services. |
