Other Awesome Accessories

Got a dirty UMD? A dirty screen? Need a better grip? These miscellaneous accessories may be just what you need.

Naki World PSP UMD Disc Cleaning Kit

If all goes well, you may never need this kit. If you take good care of your UMDs and store them in their plastic cases when you're not using them, you won't need this kit. We all make mistakes, though, and sometimes you can't help but drop your UMDs into a trash can full of coffee grounds. Then what do you do? Whip our your Naki World PSP UMD Disc Cleaning Kit (Figure A.8), of course.

Figure A.8. The UMD Disk Cleaning Kit and its nontoxic cleaning fluid.

Equipped with cleaning fluid and a spare cleaning head, the cleaner isn't much larger than a UMD itself (Figure A.9). All you do is place the soiled UMD in the cradle, splash a drop or two of the nontoxic cleaning fluid onto the cleaning head, close the cleaner, and turn a crank to rotate the UMD clockwise for a few minutes.

Figure A.9. The UMD cleaner is small enough to fit into your carry-on luggage.

The UMD cleaner isn't a scratch remover, but the PSP generally is pretty tolerant of minor scratches anyway. My only complaint is that turning the little crank sets off my carpal tunnel; is a motorized version on the way?

Nyko Charger Grip for PSP

Much has been said about the relatively uncomfortable positioning of the PSP's buttons and especially its analog stick. Even more has been said about the questionable battery life. Take care of both situations with the Nyko Charger Grip for PSP (Figure A.10).

Figure A.10. Nyko's Charger Grip fits the PSP, and your hands, like a proverbial glove.

The Charger Grip features palm-friendly grips reminiscent of the PlayStation 2's trademark controller. Deep within its frame, it holds a lithium-ion battery that you can charge with the PSP's AC adapter, and that gives your PSP about 4 to 5 more hours of play time on top of the 3 or so offered by its internal battery. When your PSP isn't seated in its solid cradle, the Charger Grip folds into a smaller version of itself (Figure A.11) to fit nicely into your travel bag or sock drawer.

Figure A.11. The Charger Grip collapses for portability.

With the Charger Grip in place, the PSP suddenly feels more like a full-size console controller, and it's a heck of a lot more comfortable than it is without the Charger Grip. Just be careful not to snap the arms that hold the PSP in place, as they're sort of thin and made of plastic. Duct tape wouldn't make a good substitute.

Naki World G-Pak

Now you've got a PSP, a pile of UMDs, and a bunch of accessories, not to mention spare Memory Stick Duos and the requisite charger for when the batteries die. You have to go on a trip to Aunt Louise's house, and you can't leave any of your gear behind. What do you do, hotshot? Check out the Naki World G-Pak (Figure A.12), a bona-fide suitcase for your PSP and all of its accessories.

The padded case has a front pocket and an interior with several dividers (Figure A.13), so you can stuff in a whole lot of PSP gear and not worry about it getting damaged or shaken up too much. You can stuff as many as 22 UMDs into this leather-and-nylon case, and the shoulder strap makes the G-Pak easy to carry as you're juggling bags through an airport on the way to yet another trade show.

GameStop Screen Guard for Sony PSP

www.gamestop.com

If you use your PSP with care, you may not need this final accessory at all. On the other hand, it can't hurt; it doesn't cost very much; and it's there in case you need it. I am, of course, talking about a screen guard, the one pictured (Figure A.14) being GameStop's own brand. I bought mine right at the GameStop in my local mall.

There's a whole bunch of stuff in the package (Figure A.15). The GameStop Screen Guard for Sony PSP contains a pair of clear plastic screen protectors that fit perfectly over the PSP screen and protect it from fingerprints, smudges, and (most important) scratches. Also included is a microfiber cloth to clean the screen before you apply a screen guard. A little card included in the package helps you apply the screen protector and work out any bubbles that might otherwise mar your gaming or movie-watching experience.
