Web-Connection Problems and Solutions

Despite your best efforts, things just go wrong sometimes. They tend to go wrong with networking more than they go right, and that's coming from a guy who's been setting up small computer networks since 1995. Either I've never gotten very good at it, or it's more of a pain in the butt than it looks.

If you fire up your PSP, and it doesn't want to find the Web, run through the symptoms and solutions listed in Table 10.1.

Table 10.1. Troubleshooting PSP Problems

Symptom

Try This!

Connection fails, and your PSP says something about a WLAN switch.

Turn on the WLAN switch on the left side of the unit, and try again.

Connection fails, but the WLAN switch is on.

Check your PSP's network settings; make sure that the SSID and security keys are correct.

Connection fails, the WLAN is on, and network settings are correct.

Get closer to the router, and try again.

Connection fails 3 feet from the router.

Go into the PSP's Network Settings menu, and make sure WLAN Power Save is off.

Connection fails; this is getting ridiculous.

Check the router's security settings. See whether you need to enter the MAC address.

Connection fails; come on!

Get away from interference devices: microwave ovens, cordless phones, large speakers and other stereo equipment, and such.

Connection fails, and fails, and fails ...

Make sure that the power to the router is connected.

connection fails; that was stupid.

If you can, check the network with another Wi-Fi device, such as a PC; it sounds like something is broken.

Web site fails to load.

Make sure that your Internet service isn't out; visit the Web with your computer.

Web site fails to load, but Internet service isn't out.

Visit that particular Web page with your PC to make sure it's not down.

Web site fails to load; it's not down.

Get closer to the router; as you get farther away, the wireless connection gets slower and eventually cuts out.

The Web page looks wrong.

Not all Web pages look right on the PSP.

This Web site doesn't work!

It probably wants something that the PSP doesn't support, such as Active X controls.

I can't play game X online.

Make sure that the game is designed for Internet play, not simply direct network play.

Game Sharing isn't working.

That really doesn't have anything to do with the Web; check the support Web site for that particular game.
