The MIME Utility

The OpenVMS MIME utility is a standalone application that can encode and decode MIME–(Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension) formatted messages. MIME format is commonly used to include non text file types (e.g., graphic images, audio files, and spreadsheets files) and is understood by a wide variety of e-mail clients.

If you do not use a MIME-capable mail client, you may use the MIME utility to decode any MIME-formatted messages you receive or to encode MIME messages you wish to send to others.

To decode a MIME message, use the EXTRACT command in OpenVMS mail to save the message to an external file. Then use the MIME utility to extract and decode the various parts of the message.

For information about the MIME utility, enter HELP MIME at the DCL prompt, or start the MIME utility and enter HELP at the MIME prompt.

To start the MIME utility, enter the following commands:

$ MIME :== $SYS$SYSTEM:MIME.EXE ! May not be necessary on your system $ MIME
