First, you must acquire a user account. If you are using an existing OpenVMS system, the system manager will supply you with a username and initial password. If you have just installed OpenVMS on a computer, use the SYSTEM account and the password that was determined at installation time.
Note | the SYSTEM account is, by default, a fully privileged account. Please exercise caution when using it, as it is possible to cause any number of unpleasant results, including the accidental deletion of very important files. On a newly installed system, the best course of action is to use the SYSTEM account to create a normally privileged account, and then use the new account for experimentation. For complete information on maintaining accounts, see the OpenVMS System Management Utilities Reference Manual in the OpenVMS documentation set. Within it, locate the chapter on the Authorize Utility. |
