Chapter 62. Changing the Color of a Single Hyperlink

There's no way in straight HTML for you to change the color of a single hyperlink on your page. You have the link, vlink, and alink attributes in the body tag, which define the link colors for all links equally, but you don't have the option of making the default unvisited link color blue, for example, and one particular unvisited link red.

TIP

Watch out about changing individual link colors too frequently. Your visitors rely on the link colors to give them an idea about what pages of your site they've already seen. Any time you deviate from the pattern of your default link color scheme, you run the risk of confusing your audience.

However, a perfectly valid use of these techniques might be to change the color of script-launching links to separate them from normal hyperlinks. Doing this reinforces the idea that script-launching links are different kinds of things than page-loading links, which helps to make your site easier to use.

You don't have the option, that is, unless you use CSS, which gives you a couple of different ways to change the color of a particular link.
