The solution

The pattern didn't include any software commonalities. We weren't always running a certain program or exercising a certain driver. The system was just up and dying, both when being used and when sitting idle. This pointed more to a hardware fault.

The UKAC engineer who worked on this problem quickly ordered up a new CPU for the system. It was installed that day. The system didn't crash again after that.
