Passing on Your Experiences

We would like to leave you with one additional suggestion about how you can use these passages. We have noted that emotional intelligence is forged in the passages and have described how struggles and new experiences help you become more empathic, a better communicator, and a more trusted and trusting leader. As a result, you become better able to help others navigate these passages successfully, simultaneously fulfilling another leadership requirement. You become sensitive to what others are going through and the support they require. If a direct report returns from maternity leave, your unconscious attitude won’t be, “Let’s see if she can keep up.” Instead, your approach as a leader will become, “What can I do to help?” A primary responsibility of a leader is to grow other people; as a passage-tested executive, you are in an ideal position to fulfill this responsibility.

The thirteen predictable, intense passages can certainly be stressful, confusing, and emotionally volatile periods in your life. They are also the foundation with which you can become a stronger, more humane, and more effective leader. With insight, reflection, and a strong dose of self-forgiveness, you can turn the experiences of your life and career into personal growth for yourself and for others.
