Chapter 17: An Eight-Step Survive-and-Thrive Guide

Overview

If your organization has implemented some of our suggestions from the previous chapter, you will probably find the passages easier to navigate. They may be part of your own leadership development philosophy already. But no matter how your company defines or implements leadership development or recognizes the importance of personal and professional challenges, you must continually learn and grow as a leader. Ultimately, you are responsible for your own development.

Throughout this book, we’ve suggested ways to view leadership development in a different light and show how you can maximize learning and growth in each of the passages we describe. We’ve tailored our advice to the nature of each passage, in most cases based on a simple model of reflecting on and redefining the event. You can enlist the help of an executive coach to help you, or you can use this book to do the same thing on your own. Obviously, how you deal with a significant life passage will be very different from how you handle a new project assignment; divorce or the loss of a loved one cannot be equated with a new business responsibility. But all the passages involve growth and development; all contribute to your view of yourself and, ultimately, to your leadership effectiveness.

Not so obviously, perhaps, certain traits and habits help leaders maximize the insights and benefits of all the passages. Based on our interviews, as well as our coaching experiences, we have identified eight distinct “steps” that facilitate the movement through all personal and professional passages. Following the steps will help you avoid the career and personal derailments that lurk within each passage and instead take advantage of the leadership learning in each.
