Chapter 9: Network Models

Overview

model n : a description or representation of a system

An architect who designs a building has to take into consideration the kind of structure that is needed. Designing a skyscraper, for example, reflects a very different model from a warehouse. There are different tools, systems, and uses for each design. Computer networks also have various models that are used to suit specific scenarios.

When designing a network, you can choose from several network models. Some of the considerations that go into choosing a network model include the size of the network, the number of users you will support, and the network operating system you will use. This chapter provides an overview of these common network models:

  • Peer-to-peer

  • Client-server, including the domain model and the directory services model
