Chapter 15: File and Print Management

Overview

share n : an access point to a resource or set of resources on the network

In Chapter 14, 'Account Management,' you looked at one half of the process of allowing users to access resources-creating users and groups. The other half of the process, covered here, is creating and making available network resources for these users to access. Numerous hardware and software components can be made available on the network, but by far the most commonly shared resources are printers and data directories.

In general, this second half of the process requires two steps. First, you need to create the resource and prepare it for use by network users. Second, you need to make it available through the process of sharing. This chapter takes you through both steps. You will also examine the creation and sharing of a printer in Windows XP/Server 2003. You can use printers locally or share them through the network. Just as you can apply permissions to folders, you also can apply security to printers.

This chapter will cover these topics:

  • Sharing folders and printers

  • Assigning permissions to users and groups

  • Using NTFS and assigning NTFS permissions

  • Understanding how share permissions interact with NTFS

  • Accessing resources
