Your career is your responsibility, and asking for a promotion is the true test of taking control of your career. If you did not get the promotion you wanted, something is missing for you, for your company, or both. If, after seeking honest and meaningful feedback, you find there is something you can learn, commit to learning it. If there is a cultural or political mismatch, think about moving on by moving out of your current company. Do not leave the management of your career to someone else—or to chance. Take control and be ready for the next opportunity.
