If you are to get a promotion, it is important for you to have an accurate view of how others see you, over and above your work product (which must be brilliant). If you scored below 175 on the Promotability Quotient, review your Needs Analysis Form (Exhibit 1-2) to identify and remove behavioral barriers. If you are having trouble identifying your barriers using this form, consider working with a coach. Many good coaches offer pro bono coaching, some will barter, and others work for a monthly fee. Use the coach referral resource in Chapter 15 to find a coach who will fit within your budget. Getting a handle on any barriers will help you quickly move ahead in your career.
If necessary, review the rebound plan outlined in Chapter 1 to rebuild your reputation in preparation for a promotion. If a rebound is not possible with your current employer, see Chapter 13, “If, When, and How to Leave Your Job.”
