Get the facts. You will want an estimate of the salary range for your position within your current organization and also the value of your position on the open market. This is important: If you simply ask for a raise, your boss may give you a nominal increase that will eliminate your opportunity to negotiate. Have a specific figure in mind—percentage and dollar—so that you can negotiate. Use the resources given in Chapter 15 to research salaries—and remember, the more information you have, the more likely it is that your boss will accept your request.
