Obviously, this book targets managers. More specifically , it targets software development managers in (1) information systems (IS) organizations within enterprises and (2) product development groups within software vendors . To a great extent, however, the needs of these two managerial audiences intersect. They both need a basic understanding of the technology software, as well as guidance in the processes and people necessary for success, but their organizations require different XML applications. This book accommodates that difference. Even within these two audiences, managers differ significantly in their individual backgrounds and managerial goals. Different managers will require different levels of detail for each of the three basic XML topics listed previously. To a certain extent, the level of detail required correlates with job responsibility, as shown in Table Preface-1. As Table Preface-1 shows, technology planners and project managers will find this book the most helpful. Executives will also find portions of the book useful, but they may want to skip much of the detailed information. Application designers can benefit from the overview of XML technology, but they should also consult more technical resources such as developer guides. Table Preface-1.
