REINFORCING THE FOUNDATION FOR OPENNESS

When building a partnering culture, leaders must start by reinforcing the foundation for openness. Without openness an organization risks not seeing what's going on in the marketplace, with customers, with suppliers, with competitors. Recognizing how the information and connection economy operates is critical. In the Dual Age of Information and Connections people hold the key to business success as they acquire, swap, and transform information into valuable assets for your enterprise and for your customers. Straightforward two-way communication is the conduit—the ability to rapidly exchange fresh, relevant, and potentially valuable information. Openness acts like the "Refresh" button on a Web page. Would you make a buy/sell decision on an equity based on a week-old stock quote? A day-old stock quote? An hour-old stock quote? Trust allows information to flow in a steady stream. It enables team members to become partners and have a sense of shared responsibility for each other's success. How much more powerful would your workforce be if each individual exhibited this sort of trust?

In this chapter we have seen how leaders can reinforce the foundation for openness by strengthening the behaviors associated with the smart partnering attributes Self-Disclosure and Feedback and Ability to Trust. In Chapter 9 we'll see how leaders must next ensure their organization's move to the future with creativity, and how the smart partnering attributes Future Orientation and Comfort with Change can drive that creativity.
