Most people learn calculus either at the end of high school or the beginning of college. As a result, most people believe that calculus is a difficult topic. My personal belief is that a great deal of the difficulty comes from how the topic is taught. Most math classes concentrate on the mathematics of calculus without showing much in the way of practical application. In this appendix, I want to briefly explain one of the two branches of calculus in a way that most people will be able to understand. I explain the applications of calculus in the chapters themselves . If you already know calculus, you may notice that this appendix is not a complete discussion, but I do cover the following important concepts:
What is differential calculus?
What is a derivative?
Computing derivatives of polynomial functions
Computing derivatives of trigonometric functions
Computing partial derivatives of multivariable functions
