Audio Subterfuge

Audio subterfuge is mostly entertainment for yourself, but here are a couple of things you can do if you want to play around with noise.

Hidden Sounds

You can put a hidden track on a CD. This is kinda neat and maybe even a little cheesy. But it's fun.

You can put up to 99 tracks on a CD. Say your CD has 12 songs on it. You could make the hidden track a later track, say, song number 69. Then you put a bunch of blank songs between track 13 and 68. You can use the blank five-second song on the CD called 5_second_blank.wav (in the Noises folder) and just put it on there as many times as you like to fill space. (Or if you're really twisted, put slices of the Brown Sound instead.)

When the CD you burn (or a CD replicated by a pressing plant from the CD master you produce) is played , after the last of the main tracks, it will silently play all of the five-second blank songs until it gets to the hidden song.

Hidden tracks are usually not listed on the track listing. They are a fun thing that the fans have to discover on their owneither by word of mouth or by forgetting to turn the CD off and then the song starts on its own after a period of silence. It usually surprises the listener.

Brown Sound

On the second pressing of the D.I.Y. or Die DVD, the audio background under the Scenes menu has 3:41 of my music, then a minute of silence, then three more minutes of music. But the silence isn't silent. It's very loud subsonic bass. From 3:42 to 4:42, it's a loud sine wave at 3Hz, 7Hz, then 17Hz for 10 seconds each, then repeated.

Talk about bass! All three are frequencies then reputed to cause loss of bowel function at high volumes . It didn't work on myself or test subjects, though. Just makes them feel creepy. Just makes me feel drunk, but not in a fun way.

The U.S. Army actually experimented at one point with using frequencies like this as a weapon .

This is only on the second pressing, but you probably have it. The first is the Canada-only release pressing. If it says MVD on the back, it's the second pressing, even though it still says "Manufactured in Canada." It's also on the end of some of the VHS, although VHS may not have the audio capability to transmit bass this low. It's a couple of octaves lower than Watt.

I've included this sound on the CD for you to use wherever you see fit: noises/ brownSound.

Peace, love, and gastrointestinal disturbances,
