General Random Advice

Get a good cell phone plan with nationwide roaming. You'll need it to advance the shows and just keep in touch with people. I pay about 70 bucks for mine, and that includes a 10-mile tow anywhere in the U.S., up to six times a year. (I hate phone companies and refuse to endorse one. You'll have to find you own plan.)

Bring a walkman, earplugs, and mixed tapes for long drives . It will help you keep sane. I have a cheap ($35 new on eBayway cheaper than an iPod) portable CD player that also plays burned MP3 data CDs. This is huge: You can put up to 150 songs on a single CD!

Figure 16.14. CD-MP3 player. My best friend on tour.

If you must do drugs, check the drug laws of every state. In some states you can lose your van and gear if one person gets caught with dope. And be honest with each other; it's no good for one person to drag down another person.

Be careful about bringing people from one gig to another. People will want you to do this because you have an exciting life compared to them. But if they are under 18 (they might lieask for ID), even if you don't sleep with them, you can get arrested for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, especially if you cross state lines.
