Perform a Data Restore

The Roxio Backup utility allows you to create customized backup projects to back up specific files and folders that you want to preserve. You can create several backup projects to back up different sets of data. For example, you can create a different backup project for banking than for your photos.

Keeping different backup projects for different files helps you manage them better and makes it easier to find files you need to retrieve later.

This task helps you create a backup project, define what files should be backed up, where they will be backed up to, when to perform the backup, and how to back them up.

Create and Schedule a Backup

Launch Roxio Backup

Launch Roxio Backup by selecting File Backup from the Backup menu of the Easy Media Creator Home page.

Create a New Backup Project

After you have launched Roxio Backup, open the Backup Project Assistant by clicking on Create New Project.

Name the Backup Project

After the Backup Project Assistant starts, type a name for the project in the Project Name field. It is important to use a meaningful name here because you need to use that name to identify the project when retrieving files later.

Select File Types to Back Up

Roxio Backup defaults to the Select folder(s) on your computer option. When this option is selected, every file in the folders you will select in step 5 will be included in the backup.

You can also limit the backup to specific categories of files by selecting the Select files based on file types option. When you select this option, a file category list appears. Each category lists the file extensions that will be included in the backup. To add a category to the backup, select the check box next to the category name.

Key Term

File extension A set of characters (typically 3 characters) after the last . in a filename that denotes what type of data is contained in the file.

You can create a customized category by clicking on the Add button to bring up the Edit Category dialog box. In the Edit Category dialog box, you need to set the name and then either select file extensions from the list or type in your own extensions, separated by a comma, in the text box provided.

Note

You can also exclude files types from the backup by clicking on the Exclude File Types button and selecting files types to exclude. Files with the extensions that are excluded are not backed up.

Select Folders to Back Up

After you are finished setting the file types option, if necessary, use the files system tree to select the check boxes next to folders you want to back up.

Check Estimated Size of Backup

After you have added the folders you want to back up, check the estimated size of the backup by clicking on the Check button. This displays the estimated size of the backup to the left of the Check button. It is always a good idea to check the size of the backup so you know if it will fit on the destination disc or hard drive that you want to use.

After you have checked the size of the backup, click the Next button to continue.

Select Backup Destination

After you have selected what to back up, you need to configure where the files will be backed up to. First select either the CD/DVD option or the Hard Drive option. If you select the CD/DVD option, select the CD/DVD burner from the drop-down list. If you selected the Hard Drive option, click the Browse button to select a folder in which to store the backup. A folder with the project name is created in this folder when the first backup takes place.

Set Backup Type

After you have selected the backup destination, set the backup type to Full Backup or Incremental Backup. Then click the Next button to schedule the backup.

Set Manual Backup Option Or...

You can configure the backup method to manual by selecting Manual backup. If you select Manual backup, you must start the backup manually from Roxio Backup each time. This is the best option for a few scenarios. One scenario is if you want to back up files immediately after you change them. Another scenario is if you rarely change the files and only want to perform a backup when you do change them.

Tip

You can still remind yourself to back up this project even if you choose the manual method by selecting the Show Reminder check box and configuring a daily, weekly, or monthly reminder schedule.

...Schedule an Automatic Backup

You can also schedule the backup to occur automatically on a recurring schedule by selecting the Automatic backup option. When you select the Automatic backup option, the options area of the page changes and you need to configure the backup to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis by selecting Daily, Weekly, or Monthly from the drop-down list. For each option you can select specific day settings. You can also set the time the backup occurs.

You can also schedule a reminder to be sent to you a specific number of minutes before the backup occurs by selecting a time from the Show reminder at drop-down list. If you select 0 min from the list, no reminder is sent.

After you have scheduled the backup, click the Next button to configure the backup options.

Tips

You should schedule a reminder for automatic backups so the backup doesn't start while you are doing something important on the computer for two reasons. First, the computer performance is slowed considerably and second, having open files might interfere with the backup.

You might want to schedule the backup in the middle of the night to ensure that no one is using the computer.

Set Backup Options

Set the backup options you want to use when creating the backup by selecting the check box next to them. On the Backup Options screen, you can enable file compression, encryption with a password, source verification, and destination verification.

After you have finished selecting the backup options, click the Done button to save the project and return to Roxio Backup.

Tip

Verify source files before backing up is selected by default and should remain selected. It doesn't take much extra time and saves you headaches later.

Edit Backup Settings

You can edit a backup project at any time in Roxio Backup by selecting the project from the Backup Projects list and clicking on the View/Edit Project button in the taskbar to bring up the Options dialog box. All of the options discussed in steps 311 are accessible by clicking on the What, Where, When, and How buttons.

Start Backup Manually

You can start a backup manually at any time, even on projects scheduled to back up automatically, by selecting the project from the Backup Projects list and clicking on the Burn button.

Tip

You can see the history of a backup by clicking on the Show History button. The history report shows the date/time, the number of discs, and the project size of all backups that have occurred. You can also select a specific backup from the drop-down list to see a report of only one backup.
