Trim or Split a Video Clip or Photo

When you have imported all of your audio, video, and photo files, there will probably be some discrepancy between the duration of your video track and your audio track. Your audio might play just a few seconds longer than your video or vice-versa. Normally you could solve this problem by individually increasing or decreasing the duration of your still shots by a fraction to get the video to match the audio. This is very time consuming and the results are not always satisfactory. If you are in this situation, there is an easier wayVideoWave can do it for you, assuming that your audio and video last pretty close to the same amount of time. VideoWave resets the length of your video track to exactly match the audio.

It is very important to synchronize your audio and video in the correct sequence of tasks. Your transitions, for instance, shorten your video track, so you need to have added them before you synchronize. On the other hand, you want to narrate your production after you synchronize it, so you don't throw the narration off by stretching or shrinking your video track. Think carefully through the steps you are taking to create your production before you perform this task.

Synchronize Audio and Video

Finalize Positioning of Audio and Video Tracks

This is the most important step of this task. Before you synchronize your tracks, make sure you have imported everything you want in your production and that each clip is trimmed the way you would like it to appear in your video. Make any changes that affect the duration of your video or audio track, such as setting a video clip to play in fast or slow motion. Remember that the other external tracks are not linked to the audio and video tracks, and any effects placed on them do not move with the video.

Note

If your video and audio are not already a close match in time, or if you do not have any still images in your video production, you are not able to select the Fit Video & Audio option.

Select Production, Fit Video & Audio

When you are ready to synchronize your audio and video tracks, select the Production drop-down menu and click on Fit Video & Audio. This brings up the Fit to Audio window.

Review the Duration Changes

The Fit to Audio window allows you to preview the duration change that is made to each still shot to fit the video to the audio. If you are not satisfied with the duration change, click Cancel to exit the window without making any changes.

Click OK

If you are satisfied with the duration change, click OK. You have to wait several seconds for the change to take place, but after it has, your video and audio tracks match precisely.

Note

Many audio tracks include a few seconds of silence at the beginning and end. Be sure to check for extended periods of silence at the beginning and end of your audio track before choosing Fit Audio & Video if you don't want to have your first or last couple of pictures appearing with no music behind them. To trim unwanted silence from your chosen audio track, follow the steps outlined for trimming a clip in Add Audio Files to a Video Production.
