Chapter 16. Sharing an Internet Connection

In this chapter

  • Sharing your computer's Internet connection

  • Connecting your network to a modem

  • Understanding DHCP

  • Domain Name Service (DNS)

  • Configuring mixed wired-wireless networks

This chapter gives you more information about sharing your Internet connection. I'll show you how to set up a single computer to share an Internet connection. Next, I'll revisit the settings you need to use to connect your home or small office network to the Internet. (Chapter 14, "Setting Up Your Access Point," provides basic information about this.)

It's a good idea to know something about the basic technologies that make the connection between the Internet and your home or small office network work. In this chapter, I'll explain static versus dynamic IP addressing, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Network Address Translation (NAT), and DNS (Domain Name System).

Finally, I'll show you a good alternative way to set up a mixed wired-wireless network that differs from the scenario I explained in Chapter 14.
