Chapter 19. Securing Your Wi-Fi Network

In this chapter

  • Understanding the threat to wireless network security

  • Creating a wireless security game plan

  • Security levels and the steps to take

  • Understanding firewalls

  • Creating a VPN remote access server in Windows XP

  • MAC filtering

We live in a world that can seem increasingly dangerous both to human beings and their computers. Wi-Fi networks are very convenient, wonderful to use, and easy to deploy (as I explained in Part IV, "Creating a Wi-Fi Network"). But running a wireless network does pose a substantial security risk.

This chapter will help you assess the risk that your wireless network poses, and create a game plan for dealing with these risks. I'll also show you how to work with some of the tools that can be used to minimize risks, including firewall and VPN servers, and MAC filtering.
