Summary

Summary

RADIUS is an industry-standard protocol that is used to centralize the authentication, authorization, and accounting of network access connections. IAS is an implementation of a RADIUS server (in Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003) and proxy (in Windows Server 2003). IAS uses connection request processing to determine its role as a RADIUS server or proxy for a given incoming RADIUS request message. As a RADIUS server, IAS uses Windows account databases to verify authentication and the dial-in properties of account and remote access policies to determine authorization. As a RADIUS proxy, IAS uses connection request policies and remote RADIUS server groups to determine the RADIUS server to which the RADIUS request message is forwarded. In an enterprise, IAS uses Active Directory account credentials to perform authentication and Active Directory account properties and groups to perform authorization.
