Windows XP Wireless Provisioning Services

Windows XP Wireless Provisioning Services

To help solve these issues for WISPs and wireless users, Windows XP is being extended with Wireless Provisioning Services, an update to the existing wireless service in Windows XP. This update allows wireless users to seamlessly detect, sign up, get provisioned, and use wireless hotspots through a common user interface and configuration update method.

Provisioning is the process of sending the wireless client a set of configuration information about the WISP s network that includes items such as the names of Service Set Identifiers (SSIDs), 802.1X settings, authentication settings, and WISP locations. This configuration information is used for subsequent automated connection to the hotspots of the WISP. Wireless Provisioning Services for Windows XP allows provisioning entities such as WISPs to send Extensible Markup Language (XML) formatted configuration information to the wireless client for both initial sign-up and ongoing configuration changes.

WISPs that will be supporting Wireless Provisioning Services for Windows XP must deploy an infrastructure to support provisioning, sign-up, and authentication of prospective and existing customers to allow them to connect to the network.
