Fortunately, links between tasks are not permanent. You may need to remove a link because of scheduling changes or create a dependency with a different task. But be aware that once a task link is broken, its schedule and the schedules of its successors are changed.

Here's how to unlink tasks.

  1. Select the Research Microsoft Project 2003 task, and then press the Shift key and select the Create Outline task.

    Once the linked tasks are selected, they are ready to be unlinked.

  2. Click the Unlink Tasks button.


    Tip: Another way to unlink tasks is to select Edit

    The two tasks are unlinked, and the start date of the "Create outline" task is rescheduled to the project start date, as shown in Figure 2-9.

    Notice that all of its successor tasks are also affected by the change. When unlinking tasks in your project, always make sure to create another task relationship for the unlinked tasks. This will put your project schedule back on track.

TO UNLINK TASKS:

  1. SELECT THE PREDECESSOR TASK IN THE TASK RELATIONSHIP YOU WANT TO BREAK.

  2. CLICK THE UNLINK TASKS BUTTON ON THE STANDARD TOOLBAR.
