Q1:

What can I do with the Foreground color ?

A1:

The Foreground color is your painting color. Any tool that applies paint, such as the Brush, Paint Bucket, or Pencil tools, adds color based on the Foreground color swatch near the bottom of the Toolbox.

Key settings/issues : Choose a Foreground color through various means, including using the Color Picker, Swatches palette, or Eye-dropper tool (I).

Keyboard shortcut : D sets the Foreground color to the default black.

Q2:

What can I do with the Background color?

A2:

The Background color is best thought of as the canvas color. If for example, you add canvas (Image>Canvas Size), it is created using the Background color by default. On the Background layer, using the Eraser tool (E) will "erase" to the Background color.

Key settings/issues : Choose a Background color through various means, including using the Color Picker, Swatches palette, or Eyedropper tool (I).

Keyboard shortcut : D sets the Background color to the default white.
