Outline Stroke

One simple way to make a shape that you can use as a building block to create your design, is to convert a path with a thick stroke into an object. Draw a path, add a thick stroke (Window>Stroke), and then from the Object menu choose Path>Outline Stroke. In our example, we then straightened the ends and made multiple copies.
