Chapter 15: Introduction to Paint Shop Pro


Paint Shop Pro is an excellent graphics editor and is a great choice for game developers. Currently in its seventh release, Paint Shop Pro offers a tremendous number of features in a very low-cost product. It supports both bitmap and vector objects, which allow you to have access to both types of graphics without purchasing another tool. For game designs and texture creation, Paint Shop Pro offers everything you need in one easy-to-use package.

Installation

Before we begin discussing specifics of Paint Shop Pro, we need to install it.

On the CD It’s located on the CD-ROM that shipped with the book in the Applications directory and is called PSP702ev.exe. If you would prefer, you could download the most up-to-date version from http://www.jasc.com.

The first step in the installation process is running the executable file. It will begin the installation process, and you will be presented with a screen that looks similar to Figure 15.1. You can leave the directory as it is listed. It’s only a temporary directory for the installation files.

Click the Next button to continue the installation. The next step will take a few moments before another window will finally appear. It should look similar to Figure 15.2. You need to click the Next button at this window.

The next window that is displayed is a license window, which can be seen in Figure 15.3. It displays the Paint Shop Pro license agreement that you should read. In order to continue the installation, you need to accept the terms of the license.

After you accept the agreement, click the Next button. The window seen in Figure 15.4 is displayed and allows you to select a complete installation or a custom installation. Leave the installation set at Complete and click Next.

The last step is to select the Install button from the window that looks similar to Figure 15.5.

Once you have finished the installation, the InstallShield Wizard will display a window that looks something like Figure 15.6. You should choose to create a shortcut on the desktop from this window and click Next. In the last window, you should click Finish.

Once the installation has been completely finished, you will find a shortcut to Paint Shop Pro on your desktop. Double-click the Paint Shop Pro shortcut. When it is first started, a window will be displayed that looks like Figure 15.7. If you would like to purchase Paint Shop Pro, you can do so by clicking on the Order button. It will give you details on how to purchase Paint Shop Pro. If you do not choose to purchase it, you can use Paint Shop Pro freely for 30 days by clicking the Start button to move on.

Caution

Paint Shop Pro will function correctly for only 30 days unless you purchase it.

Another window will be displayed that asks you to pick your file associations. If you are unfamiliar with file associations, they allow a program such as Paint Shop Pro to be opened simply by double-clicking a file it is associated with. Unless you have some specific files in mind, you should leave the standard files selected, some of which are displayed in Figure 15.8.

Once you have determined the correct files, you can click the OK button to display the standard Paint Shop Pro user interface.
