What Just Happened?

According to the Identity Theft Resource Center, it's not uncommon for women to discover that their pictures are being used in some unsavory ways online. Their photos are modified using image-editing software, and then used to lure men into online chats that mask commercial pornography sites. Men are the intended financial victims of this type of fraud, but the women whose photos have been stolen and altered are also victims.

Internet dating is a terrific way for people to meet new friends, but Suzanne's case underscores one of the pitfalls of posting personal information online to find a date or a mate: Even when you take precautions and use reputable sites, there are still some risks.

Does that mean that online dating should be avoided at all costs? Certainly not. I personally know several women who are now married to wonderful partners they met through Internet dating sites, and chances are you do too.

Think About It

Many social networking sites now offer online dating services for free. However, you need to clearly understand any potential trade-offs, as these sites likely do not have the same safety precautions that established dating sites provide. These features include screening, separate communication accounts so you do not have to give access to your primary e-mail or IM account, and site monitoring for abuses.
