CHAPTER SUMMARY

Upon completing this chapter, you should have obtained a good basic understanding of the Microsoft Me operating system and the specific areas of the operating system that are most likely to appear on the CompTIA A+ Operating Systems Technologies exam. It is important to remember that Windows Me has been added to the A+ Operating Systems Technologies exam as CompTIA 2003 Objective. For that reason, it is a sure bet that CompTIA will ask several Windows Me-related questions on the exam. At this point, you should be familiar with the following processes and tools:

  • The Windows Me installation and upgrade processes and procedures.

  • The Windows Me start-up process.

  • Basic navigation skills from within Windows Me, including using and locating windows, applets, and associated shortcuts.

  • Be able to establish an Internet connection and have knowledge of the associated Internet tools and settings from within Windows Me.

  • Familiarity with Windows Me tools such as DXDIAG, System Restore, PCHealth tools, and MSCONFIG.

  • You should know the diagnosing and troubleshooting test tips by heart and be able to answer all of the review questions correctly.

As a final note regarding your Microsoft Me exam preparation, you should think of Windows Me as an extension of Windows 9x. In other words, Windows Me is very similar to Windows 98, with the exception of a few new features and support for such technologies as USB and FireWire.

Windows Me was intended to be the next supercharged version of Windows 98, with all new bells and whistles. But, as recent history has shown, the real supercharged operating system of choice award belongs to Windows XP, and Windows Me stands as more of an incremental update from Windows 9x. We will cover Window XP next in Chapter 28.
