Section 30.5. Conclusion

30.5. Conclusion

This chapter discussed just some of the many security and usability challenges faced by the full-featured collaborative application infrastructure provided by IBM Lotus Notes and Domino. Up-front design that simplified the security functions and integrated them tightly into collaboration tasks has provided the best usability benefits. Coping with the addition of new features and flexible standards has proved to be a continuing challenge for tight integration and usability of the security features. Usability testing or expert review yields clear benefits on the basics, but hasn't scaled to cover big concept additions or changes in our environment. It also does not address many issues around integrating security information display into user tasks, perhaps because more information is available than should be put into the default view of an application task. Data on how users actually use and respond to security features is an excellent motivator for further enhancements. We continue to work to move the necessity for security decisions off end users and administrators, and still provide them with a secure and usable product.
